Effects of Euphorbia hirta and virginiamycin supplementation tothe diet on performance, digestibility, and intestinal microflora population in broiler chickens

Summary

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing various dosages of Euphorbia hirta powderon performance, digestibility, and ileal microflora populationin broiler chickens. E. hirta was supplemented at inclusion rates of 2.5 (EH2.5), 5.0 (EH5.0) and 7.5 (EH7.5) g/kg from d 1 to 42 and compared with an antibiotic group (0.02 g/kg virginiamycin) (VM) as well as a group of non-supplemented birds (control).

Diet had negligible effect on body weight and feed intake.Supplementation with E. hirta (irrespective of dosage) and virginiamycin significantly improved overall FCR when compared to control. The EH7.5 birds showed the best overall FCR. Feeding birds with EH5.0 and EH7.5 significantly reduced CFU of total aerobic bacteria when compared to other groups on both d 21 and 42. The CFU numberof Lactobacilli was significantly higher in VM and EH2.5 chicks on days 21 and 42, respectively. Birds fed EH2.5, EH7.5 and VM had significantly lower CFU of E. coli than other groups on d21. Generally, E. hirta supplementation was beneficial in improving AME and AMEnwhen compared to VM and control groups. The protein digestibilityof EH5.0, EH7.5 and VM birds were similar and significantlyhigher than of control birds. On d 21, irrespective of gastrointestinal segment, the EH5.0 and EH7.5 birds had significantly lower pH than their control and VM counterparts. Except for crop and duodenum, EH7.5 had lower pH values than controls on d 42. In conclusion, E. hirta powder at an inclusion rate of 7.5 g/kg appeared to be a potential alternative to antibiotic growth promoter in broiler chickens.
