The effects of dietary nonphytate phosphorus levels and phytase on laying performance and egg quality parameters of Japanese quails ( Coturnix coturnix Japonica )

Summary

An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of microbial phytase associated with different nonphytate phosphorus (NPP) levels on performance and egg quality parameters of laying quails from 8-16 weeks of age. A total of 196 Japanese quail were fed mash corn-soybean meal (CSM) based diets containing 0.35% (positive control, PC), 0.25% (negative control, NC1) or 0.15% (NC2) nonphytate phosphorus. Three levels of phytase (0, 300 and 600 FTU/kg) were added to each negative control diet. Thus, the experimental quails were divided into seven dietary treatments. Each dietary treatment subclass was replicated four times with seven Japanese quails per replication in a randomized complete block design.

The present results indicated that phytase supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) increased shell thickness, eggshell percentage and also improved significantly (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio than control group. Shell thickness was increased when quails were fed 0.35 and 0.25% compared to those receiving diets with 0.15% NPP. While, supplementation of phytase, different levels of NPP and their interactions had no significant influence on body weight change, feed consumption, egg mass, egg production, eggshell weight and Haugh unit (P > 0.05). Also in other egg quality parameters were not significant differences among the groups. However, the best results with phytase were achieved by those laying quail fed a 0.25% level of NPP.Results indicated that phytase efficacious in CSM-based dietsfed to laying Japanese quail and can be used to reduce diet supplementation with inorganic phosphorus.
